1:1 ข้าพเจ้าผู้ปกครอง เรียน มายังท่านสุภาพสตรีที่ทรงเลือกสรรไว้ และบรรดาบุตรของเธอ ผู้ซึ่งข้าพเจ้ารักเนื่องด้วยความจริงนั้น และมิใช่แต่ข้าพเจ้าเท่านั้น แต่คนทั้งปวงที่ได้รู้จักความจริงก็รักด้วย
1:1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
1:2 เพราะเห็นแก่ความจริงที่อยู่ในเราทั้งหลาย และซึ่งจะดำรงอยู่กับเราเป็นนิตย์
1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
1:3 ขอพระกรุณาธิคุณ พระเมตตาคุณ และสันติสุขจากพระเจ้าพระบิดา และจากพระเยซูคริสต์เจ้าพระบุตรแห่งพระบิดา สถิตอยู่กับท่านทั้งหลายในความจริงและในความรัก
1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
1:4 ข้าพเจ้าชื่นชมยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ได้เห็นบุตรของท่านดำเนินตามความจริง ตามที่เราได้รับพระบัญญัติจากพระบิดา
1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
1:5 และท่านสุภาพสตรี บัดนี้ข้าพเจ้าขอวิงวอนท่าน มิใช่เสมือนหนึ่งว่าข้าพเจ้าเขียนพระบัญญัติใหม่ให้แก่ท่าน แต่เป็นพระบัญญัติที่เราได้มีมาแล้วตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก นั่นก็คือให้เราทั้งหลายรักซึ่งกันและกัน
1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
1:6 และความรักนั้นก็คือ การที่เราทั้งหลายดำเนินตามพระบัญญัติของพระองค์ นี่เป็นพระบัญญัตินั้นซึ่งท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินได้ฟังมาตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก เพื่อท่านทั้งหลายจะดำเนินตาม
1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
1:7 เพราะว่ามีผู้ล่อลวงเป็นอันมากออกเที่ยวไปในโลก คือคนที่ไม่รับว่าพระเยซูคริสต์ได้เสด็จมาเป็นมนุษย์ คนนั้นแหละเป็นผู้ล่อลวงและเป็นปฏิปักษ์ต่อพระคริสต์
1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
1:8 ท่านทั้งหลายจงระวังตัวให้ดี เพื่อเราจะได้ไม่สูญเสียสิ่งที่เราได้กระทำมาแล้ว แต่จะได้รับบำเหน็จเต็มที่
1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
1:9 ผู้ใดละเมิดและไม่อยู่ในพระโอวาทของพระคริสต์ ผู้นั้นก็ไม่มีพระเจ้า ผู้ใดอยู่ในพระโอวาทของพระคริสต์ ผู้นั้นก็มีทั้งพระบิดาและพระบุตร
1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
1:10 ถ้าผู้ใดมาหาท่านและไม่นำพระโอวาทนี้มาด้วย อย่ารับเขาไว้ในเรือน และอย่าขอพรให้เขาเลย
1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
1:11 เพราะว่าผู้ที่ขอพรให้เขา ก็เข้าส่วนในการกระทำชั่วของเขานั้น
1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
1:12 ข้าพเจ้ายังมีข้อความอีกหลายข้อที่จะเขียนมาถึงท่าน แต่ก็ไม่อยากจะเขียนด้วยกระดาษและน้ำหมึก ข้าพเจ้าหวังใจว่าจะมาหาท่าน และสนทนากันต่อหน้า เพื่อความปีติยินดีของเราจะได้เต็มเปี่ยม
1:12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
1:13 บรรดาบุตรของน้องสาวของท่านที่ได้ทรงเลือกสรรไว้ ฝากความระลึกถึงมายังท่าน เอเมน
1:13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
