6:1 มีสิ่งสามานย์อย่างหนึ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าเห็นภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ และสิ่งนั้นหนักแก่มนุษย์
6:1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
6:2 คือมนุษย์คนใดที่พระเจ้าทรงประทานทรัพย์สมบัติ ความมั่งคั่งและยศฐาบรรดาศักดิ์ให้ จนสิ่งใดๆที่เขาปรารถนาสำหรับตัว จิตใจเขาก็มีครบไม่ขาดเลย แต่พระเจ้ามิได้ทรงโปรดให้เขามีอำนาจรับประทานสิ่งนั้นได้ คนนอกบ้านนอกเมืองกลับรับประทานสิ่งนั้น นี่ก็อนิจจัง และเป็นความทุกข์ใจอย่างร้ายแรง
6:2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
6:3 แม้ว่ามนุษย์คนใดมีบุตรสักร้อยคน และมีอายุอยู่หลายปี จนปีเดือนของเขาก็มากมาย แต่จิตใจของเขาหาได้อิ่มด้วยของดีไม่ ยิ่งกว่านั้นอีก เขาไม่มีงานฝังศพของตนด้วย ข้าพเจ้าว่าบุตรที่เกิดมาแท้งเสียยังดีกว่าคนนั้น
6:3 If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
6:4 เพราะเด็กนั้นเกิดมาอนิจจังและตายไปในความมืด และชื่อของเขาถูกปิดไว้ในความมืด
6:4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
6:5 ยิ่งกว่านั้นอีก ยังไม่ทันเห็นตะวันหรือยังไม่ทันรู้เรื่องราวอะไร เด็กคนนี้มีความสงบสุขยิ่งกว่าผู้ใหญ่นั้นเสียอีก
6:5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
6:6 เออ แม้ว่าเขามีชีวิตอยู่พันปีทวีอีกเท่าตัว แต่ไม่ได้เห็นของดีอะไร ทุกคนมิได้ลงไปที่เดียวกันหมดดอกหรือ
6:6 Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
6:7 บรรดาการงานของมนุษย์ก็เพื่อปากของเขา แต่ถึงกระนั้นเขาก็ไม่รู้จักอิ่ม
6:7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
6:8 ด้วยว่าคนมีสติปัญญาได้เปรียบอะไรกว่าคนเขลาเล่า หรือคนยากจนที่รู้จักดำเนินชีวิตของตนอยู่ต่อหน้าคนที่มีชีวิตก็ได้เปรียบอะไร
6:8 For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
6:9 เห็นแล้วกับนัยน์ตาก็ดีกว่าความปรารถนาที่ตระเวนไป นี่ก็เป็นความว่างเปล่าและความวุ่นวายใจด้วย
6:9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
6:10 สิ่งใดซึ่งมีอยู่เดี๋ยวนี้ เขาได้ใช้ชื่อเรียกสิ่งนั้นนานมาแล้ว และก็ทราบกันแล้วว่ามนุษย์คืออะไร และเขาไม่อาจโต้เถียงกับพระองค์ผู้ทรงฤทธิ์เดชากว่าตนได้
6:10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
6:11 ยิ่งมีสิ่งของมากก็ยิ่งอนิจจังมากแล้วจะเป็นประโยชน์อะไรแก่มนุษย์เล่า
6:11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
6:12 ใครคนไหนรู้ว่าสิ่งใดเป็นสิ่งที่ดีสำหรับมนุษย์ในชีวิตนี้ คือในระยะวันเดือนปีทั้งหลายแห่งชีวิตอันเหลวๆของตนที่ได้เสียไปดุจดังเงาเล่า หรือใครผู้ใดอาจบอกกับมนุษย์ได้ว่า สิ่งนี้สิ่งนั้นจะเกิดขึ้นภายหลังตนที่ภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์
6:12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
